Grammar Points:

  • Colons can introduce almost anything: words, phrases, sentences, quotations, or even lists.
  • By creating a pause, the colon helps to emphasize the item that follows it, be it a word, a quote, etc.
  • By using "namely" in place of the colon, one can check if the colon is placed grammatically well.
  • Make sure not to follow a verb with a colon; this creates redundancy since both the verb and the colon introduce.

Use of a dash:

*to show a break of thought in a sentence

My professor - he's also my uncle's friend - gave us a lot of research to do.

*to introduce a list of items

My bus driver said that three things were not allowed on the bus - food, water, and gum.

*after an unfinished sentence

Then all of the sudden I saw a ball come flying down and then I screamed to -

*to replace parentheses

They were all in agreement with the restructuring — even agreeing to the shortened lunch breaks — but if anyone tried to revamp their vacation time they claimed they would walk out.

*as a replacement of the word to with reference to dates, sections, verses, etc.

*Forming possessives:

Melissa's cat likes milk.

The James' household has a full stock of milk in their refrigerator.

 

*Forming contractions:

I can't drink milk because I'm lactose intolerant.

 

*Substituting missing letters (esp. slang) or numbers:

Vitamin D was first added to milk in '63.

When the girl was asked if she liked milk, she responded, "Fo' sho'!"

 

*DO NOT use apostrophes to indicate plurality unless it is a lowercase letter:

I get As (NOT A's) on my exams because I drink milk.

The "milk does a body good" campaign began in the 1990s (NOT 1990's).

Always remember to mind your p's and q's.
