From the article: Are mobile phones for young ones inappropriate or potentially useful?
One potential effect of these cellphones is the emission of hazardous radiation. Some parents argue that this radiation is no more harmful than UV rays produced by the sun. What do you think?
There are many advantages to allowing children to carry cellphones. However, how sensible is it to spend that much money on a child if they are liable to losing it as easily as they lose other personal belongings (sweaters, jackets, etc.)?
Consider the scenario of divorced parents: will this allow easier communication between parent and child without the interception of the other parent? What could be the other effects on this increased level of secrecy?
Is this integration of adult life into child live ruining what a “childhood” should be – fun, games, and one-on-one relationships with parents due to everyday nurture?
Does this teach children responsibility?
There are social constructs attached to the design of some of these phones (a button for mom and dad). What about families who do not fit this social mold?
These phones will allow instant communication between parents and children. What if you were a child trying to contact your parent and nobody answered? What psychological impact would that have on you?
How will school policies be affected by these phones?
How ethical is it to target the advertising of these phones to children?

*Do you think that children's minds are underestimated in discussions on the effect of food advertising on children?
*Out of the policy options suggested, which do you think would be most effective?
*Some of the policy options suggested were a bit extreme, do you think any of them to be necessary? Should our country be more like Sweden, Norway, and Finland in respect to their policies protecting children from "excessive marketing practices"?
*What effects would changes in our policies have on our economy?

Talking Points:
• Is media making the public healthier? (Because they are more aware of sports)
• What are the differences between the media’s portrayal of team sports versus individual sports?
• Does the media focus too much on the physical appearance of an athlete instead of their ability?
• What effect are the athletes (ex. Dennis Rodman), who perform well in their athletic area but make interesting publicity stunts having on children? Is the media to blame for making this accessible to children?
• In the 1970s sports switched from amateur based to professional based, the driving force behind this switch was media. From this switch media provided opportunities to make money and endorsements. Did this switch cause less focus on the actual sport?
• Because of this opportunity to make money children are hit hardest with this shift because there is now a market for their talents. As a result of this children begin to train earlier and harder to beat the competition. Is this being taken too far? Is the media to blame for making a market for these children’s talents?
• Where is the stopping point of training these children? Should they be on strict diets? Should they be doing endorsements? Is it the parent’s fault?

My topic is on conspiracy theories and how the media relate, mostly looking at movies, television, journalism, media reporters, etc... The following article is kind of long but basically gives an A-Z list of the most well known conspiracy theories out there. I find it quite interesting and hopefully you guys will as well. Here is the link to the article.
http://www.conspiracybomb.com/azconspiracy.htm
Additional article on some background and examples of secret socities:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secret_society
Talking points:
While reading think about the following things:
-What is a conspiracy, who are conspirators, and why would they conspire?
-How are different forms of media used by conspirators to express their ideas?
-Do you believe in any of these conspiracies in full or maybe in part, what is their validity?
-Is broadcast and news media a conspirator in the fact that they may be manipulated by unknown, higher up sources, that direct how news is portrayed? What are some examples you can think of where maybe FOX news has a totally different view from NBC or something similar.
-Have you or anybody you known been asked to join a secret society, or cult?
-Do you personally want to know further into the truth behind everything in the world, or are you completely satisfied with how everything is going now?

"Does media coverage about missing women discriminate on the basis of race or ethnicity?"
http://web.lexis-nexis.com/universe/document?_m=91323f8a6f09c58383def21528319669&_docnum=35&wchp=dGLbVtb-zSkVb&_md5=768084e3ba00717a1739156930502467
Apparently, there's a problem with the link. If you just go to Lexis Nexis Academic and type in "women racism media" in the Quick Search query, it should be the first article that comes up. It's from the LA Times titled, "Not only Natalee is missing; Is the media inattention to missing women who aren't white due to deliberate racism or unconscious bias?"
Talking Points and Questions:
- Do you think that race and economic status take a toll on what is considered news and what isn't? Why?
- How does media coverage on missing women reflect society's tendencies? For example, the "damsel in distress" stereotype for women, ignoring minorities, giving attention to the beautiful and wealthy, no coverage on missing men, etc.
- Do you think the same issues apply to the abduction of children? In the article, the author says that while Jon Bennet Ramsey, a beautiful Caucasian girl, became a household name after her disappearance in 1996 (who, by the way, even had an E! True Hollywood Story done on her), no minority child has had such extensive media coverage.
- Is the media unconsciously being racist with their coverage or is this a conscious effort? Why?
- In what other areas of the media is racism and discrimination apparent? Why might these problems still exist in our society?

http://www.apa.org/releases/violentsongs.html
http://www.psychology.iastate.edu/faculty/dgentile/106027_08.pdf
*Talking Points*
- How important are the lyrics of songs?
- Do you think music violent, aggressive or not, influences the way people act?
- Do you think parents should influence or filter what music their children listen to, and if so, to what ages does this apply?
- Music has often been blamed for incidents of violence, specifically the Columbine Shootings— do you think that this is a scapegoat or is this accusation valid?
- Music doesn’t only have aggressive or violent connotation, it also has sexual innuendos or lyrics pertaining to drug use. How does this affect youth or people in general?
- It seems like music preference has often been a cause for friendship. Why do you think kids will often choose friends based on similar music interest? Exp. Metal Heads, Goth, Punk, or Country.
